about

Bobby’s Dance is dedicated to the great vibist Bobby Hutcherson, an inspiration to countless musicians - myself included. It starts with melodic and harmonic simplicity and then moves into a richer swinging section for most of the soloing. The idea is for a piece which progresses through sections, without the need to return to the original themes.

Sleepwalking is a bebop melody based on the chords of 'You Stepped Out Of A Dream' in the same way that 'Ornithology' is based on 'How High The Moon'. Bebop melodies are often more interesting to play on vibraphone than the melodies of the tunes upon which they are based.

Wise One is a homage to John Coltrane. This track comes from the Crescent album recorded in 1964 by the classic quartet of John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. We changed the groove to a slow 12/8 and moved the key up a semitone from E minor to F minor to better fit the range of the vibraphone.

I wrote Mayo Days as a kind of straight-eighths, ECM style tune when exploring a few new harmonic ideas. It remained nameless until it became part of the set for a wonderful tour of Ireland which I played with my quartet some years ago. After a great gig in Westport, County Mayo, the name was chosen, although we were only in Mayo for one day.

Sweet Summer is a ballad in 5/4 based on a hypnotic piano pattern. It began life as a duet piece for marimba and vibraphone but has translated quite nicely for the quintet format. It aims to create the feeling of a sleepy afternoon in the sun.

Heading Home is not in any way related to Lionel Hampton’s classic ‘Flying Home’. If it does resemble any jazz standard, it would be Cedar Walton’s ‘Bolivia’, since half of the chord sequence is modal and the other half has plenty of chord changes.

The Night Flower is a slow ballad which was composed late at night quietly sitting at the piano after coming home from a very crowded and fairly loud gig. Slow, delicate chord changes can be very appealing at such times.

Solid (Sonny Rollins) comes from the classic Grant Green album of the some name which was recorded by Rudy van Gelder in 1964. We felt it would be good to have a 12 bar blues on the album, although somehow a rethink took place regarding the tempo, and this piece ended up significantly faster than the original.
